Forest Dads is a collaborative project between Equi-Librium Coaching and Therapy CIC, Tom Riddout, from Yo-Do Forest School, an experienced Forest School practitioner, and Tara Maxamed, Community Ranger, Forestry England. Built around the simple idea of “Forest School for Big Boys,” the programme creates a welcoming space where fathers of young children can step away from the pressures of everyday life, reconnect with nature and, most importantly, reconnect with one another.
The project recognises that many fathers want to be engaged, emotionally present parents but often have few opportunities to talk openly about the realities of family life, stress, work, identity and wellbeing. Rather than a traditional support group, Forest Dads brings men together through practical woodland activities, shared experiences and informal conversation, creating relationships that develop naturally around a campfire, woodland walk or hands-on task.
Over the past six months, we have successfully piloted the programme with a regular group of fathers. The results have been encouraging. Participants have developed lasting friendships, increased their confidence in seeking and offering support, and found the forest to be a powerful environment for reflection, learning and resilience. Alongside the outdoor activities, the programme benefits from the presence of experienced mental health professionals who are able to offer guidance, facilitate conversations and provide evidence-informed support without the formality or stigma that many men associate with accessing mental health services.
This combination of peer support, nature-based activity and professional expertise has created a community in which fathers feel able to discuss their own wellbeing and consider how their emotional health influences their parenting, relationships and family life. By strengthening fathers, we believe we strengthen families and create more secure, connected environments in which children can thrive.
Following the success of the pilot, our ambition is to expand Forest Dads into a sustainable community programme that is accessible to more fathers across the region. To achieve this, we are actively seeking funding bodies, corporate sponsors and community partners who share our belief in the importance of preventative mental health support, positive fatherhood and the restorative power of the natural environment.
Investment in Forest Dads is an investment in stronger fathers, healthier families and more resilient communities. With the right partners, we can build on the success of the pilot and ensure that many more men have access to a place where they can learn, connect, support one another and discover that asking for help is simply another form of strength. This was such a good positive experience. I really enjoyed talking about Dad stuff. I will definitely come back. It really helped me with my own mental health
This programme was so creative and supportive. It needs more funding so more men and dads can take advantage of it. I have already recommended it to my mates.
I really liked the mindfulness that we did. If I had my way there would be a lot more fo these sessions. Talking to other Dads and thinking about how we are with our kids has been so helpful
Being in nature really helped me ease my mind. It was great to be with other Dads and help each other. I loved building a den with the other guys. I would love to do more.
This was great fun. I enjoyed the mindfulness work and it was great to achieve together. Connecting with other Dads and nature really helped me.
