Walking with Wonder is a bespoke forest therapy programme designed for organisations, communities and groups who want to reconnect—with themselves, with others and with the natural world.
Developed by Equi-Librium Coaching and Therapy CIC, Walking with Wonder offers carefully facilitated experiences in woodland and natural environments that combine evidence-informed wellbeing practices with opportunities for reflection, conversation and shared exploration. The pace is deliberately slow. There is no destination to reach and nothing to achieve beyond noticing, connecting and belonging.
We have delivered Walking with Wonder sessions for groups including NHS overseas workers, refugees and people who have experienced significant life transitions. Many participants describe feeling “uprooted”—living in a new country, working within unfamiliar systems or carrying the emotional weight of displacement, trauma or isolation. Our approach uses the forest as both a literal and symbolic place of restoration, helping people rebuild both their internal ecosystem of emotional wellbeing and their external ecosystem of relationships, community and belonging.
Research increasingly supports the role of nature-based interventions in promoting mental health. Time spent in woodland environments has been associated with reduced stress hormones, lower blood pressure, improved mood and enhanced attentional capacity. Exposure to natural settings can reduce rumination, support emotional regulation and encourage a shift from constant vigilance towards curiosity and reflection. For people recovering from trauma or prolonged stress, these experiences can provide opportunities to reconnect with the body, regulate the nervous system and develop a renewed sense of safety in the world.
Forest therapy also offers something that is difficult to replicate in more formal settings: a shared experience that encourages authentic human connection. Walking alongside others, gathering around a fallen tree or noticing the changing seasons creates natural opportunities for conversation without pressure or expectation. Relationships develop organically, and individuals often find themselves becoming part of a community rather than simply attending a programme.
The natural environment itself becomes an active partner in the process. The rhythms of the woodland remind us that growth is rarely linear, that resilience is built through adaptation and that flourishing depends on healthy relationships within an ecosystem. Just as a forest is strengthened through diversity and interconnectedness, human wellbeing is sustained by meaningful social networks, physical movement, access to green space and opportunities for reflection and mutual support.
Walking with Wonder is therefore much more than a guided walk. It is an invitation to slow down, to rediscover curiosity, to strengthen resilience and to build connections that extend beyond the woodland path. Participants leave not only having experienced the restorative qualities of nature but with new relationships, greater confidence and practical ways of incorporating the natural world into their everyday wellbeing.
Whether supporting newly arrived communities, staff wellbeing programmes, voluntary organisations or local groups, Walking with Wonder creates inclusive spaces where people can feel grounded, connected and hopeful. By nurturing both personal resilience and collective belonging, we help individuals and communities put down new roots and grow together.s
